Downtown, inside the city's historic district, is a dense grid of rowhomes and mixed-use buildings between the Delaware, the Lehigh and the Bushkill Creek. College Hill, above the Bushkill around Lafayette College, holds the city's largest homes, most built between 1830 and 1940. The West Ward, from Sixth Street out to 15th Street, is mostly Victorian homes built before 1940. Across the Lehigh, the South Side climbs a wooded hillside of twins, older singles and postwar capes. At Atlas Design & Build, we take on tile as a standalone project or as part of a larger remodel, with substrate and layout planned for older floors and walls. We live in Easton and manage every project directly.

Local knowledge
Tile in Easton's older homes is rarely laid over a perfect base. Downtown and West Ward rowhomes have wood floors that have settled over a century, sometimes sloping toward the center of the house, and bathroom floors are often built up in layers from earlier renovations. We take floors back to a sound base and level them before tile goes down, because tile will only be as flat as what is under it.
In College Hill, tile projects often involve preserving or recreating the details of larger Victorian and Revival homes: vestibule mosaics, fireplace hearths, butler's pantry backsplashes and bathrooms with classic subway and hex patterns suited to the age of the house.
Victorian houses in the West Ward sometimes still have original hex or basketweave mosaic floors, fireplace tile and vestibule floors at the front door. Some of that tile is worth keeping or repairing, and new work can be designed to suit it.
On the South Side, postwar capes and twins often carry original pastel wall tile set in a thick mortar bed, which is durable but heavy to remove. Across the city, entries and mudrooms take hard use from steep streets and winter salt, and porcelain holds up far better there than wood or vinyl.

Yes, after correcting it. Depending on the cause, we level the floor with shims, sistered joists or a self-leveling underlayment so the new tile sits flat and does not crack.
Often. Hex and basketweave mosaics are still made in traditional sizes, so small damaged areas can be patched. For larger areas, we can replace the floor in a matching pattern.
